Hardened Hearts

This poem was taken from 2 different prompt sites.

The first site is Sunday Scribblings and the prompt there is: Humanity

The 2nd site is One Single Impression and the prompt is: Stranger

Aching whispers pass by
ephemeral, wisps of wanting,
needing; echoes of fragile, worn lives
sucked into the vortex of ego
as though they never existed.
Humanity agonizes,
oceans of tears ignored,
suffering blocked by eyes sealed
against the misery and pain
that belongs to another.
Won't see, won't look
won't let it penetrate the narcissism;
it might mean responsibility
to strangers less fortunate.
Blindness comforts,
soothes the ego too busy and
preoccupied with possessions
status and power
to bother with the forsaken afflicted.

Sad but very true. We don't see often because we don't want to. Sad but beautifully written.

Such turmoil...I could feel the torment in this poem. Great job!

Dee~ Thank you. :-) Yes, it is very true. It is all too easy to close our eyes to those who suffer so that we won't have to feel guilty for not doing anything to help ease that suffering.

gabrielle~ Exactly!

The Dark Lord~ Thank you, I am touched by your kind words.

Fledgling Poet~ Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it and that my message came through.

Thanks everyone for commenting! Have a wonderful day.

Amazing how humanity doesn't get it together, even after centuries of 'practice'. Excellent work!

I'm working on a poem for this prompt as well.

Your poem really exudes your own humanity and caring nature.

Tumblewords~ Yes, I know exactly what you mean. It seems like the more we 'evolve' the more self-centered we become.

Kat~ Thank you, I try to do what I can to make this world a better place, but I always feel like it's so little and I should be doing more, like it's never enough.

Thank you both for your wonderful comments. Have a great day!

Torment seems to be the only constant in the humanity game.

spacedlaw~ I agree. For instance, there is something seriously wrong in this world when people in countries like Africa and Haiti must feed their infants cakes made of mud, salt and leaves just so that they feel full enough to sleep at night.

Such blindness is all too common. Some of us think we earn the right to be indifferent.

Sandy~ very true!
